An Advanced Method of Ambient Electrical Cooling

Electrical thermal management is a conundrum. If it could occur in a wide open environment, wear waste heat can simply flow away from sensitive components, then there would be little or no need for electrical thermal management solutions. However, an open environment would also leave those same components vulnerable to harmful contaminants, like dust and debris, or moisture that could lead to severe damage. With modern thermal management systems, such as heat exchangers, ambient cooling can be contained in a safe, easily manageable environment. This allows companies to effectively prevent electrical overheating at minimal cost and effort.

Ambient cooling for electrical enclosures

Ambient electrical cooling is the process of maintaining the temperature within an electrical enclosure at just above the ambient temperature outside of it. For most applications, this is well below the system’s maximum operating temperature, which makes ambient cooling more than effective at preventing electrical overheating. To achieve ambient cooling, heat exchangers utilize an eco-friendly fluid that’s able to absorb a large amount of waste heat. Then, the fluid carries the heat away, dissipating it once it’s safely away from the sensitive electrical equipment inside of the enclosure.

Making ambient cooling efficient for more applications

In many traditional applications, ambient cooling is efficient enough to replace most or all of the conventional air conditioning, air compressing, and other solutions that they rely on. Yet, it has also served just as well as an optimal solution for many of the most advanced applications. Even when components give off massive amounts of waste heat, their maximum operating temperatures are typically still below the ambient temperatures outside of the enclosures. Because the process of transferring heat using an eco-friendly cooling fluid is simpler to maintain that conventional solutions, ambient heat exchangers can be easily adapted to meet the increasingly higher demands of modern applications.

The benefits of utilizing ambient cooling

The greatest benefit to employing ambient cooling methods is that the heat exchangers used to accomplish it are much more efficient at preventing electrical overheating, yet use only a fraction of the energy of traditional solutions. Transferring heat to keep temperatures at just above the ambient temperature only requires a cooling fluid and an expertly designed apparatus (such as heat pipes or cold plates). The fluid flows continuously in a loop within the heat exchanger, collecting, transferring, and dissipating heat without needing chilled air or the complicated machinery needed to generate it.
