Why NEMA Standards Are a Good Reason to Use Heat Exchangers

As the largest trade association in the United States, the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) issues hundreds of safety and operation standards across the industry. Among those standards, the classifications (or NEMA ratings) that are assigned to electrical enclosures describe the level of protection against contamination that each enclosure needs to safely operate in certain environments. At Noren, many of our products are designed specifically to meet NEMA’s high standards of excellence that not only ensure continued operation, but also offer exceptional protection from contamination and improved safety for employees.

Meeting or Exceeding NEMA Enclosure Standards

There are many different NEMA-class ratings for electrical enclosures, each requiring increasingly more comprehensive protection from the elements. For instance, NEMA Type 1, the lowest rating, describes general purpose, indoor enclosures and means that the enclosures must offer adequate protection against accidental contact from personnel. The rating type increases as the environment’s potential for contamination is heightened; for instance, enclosures may need to shield electrical components from dust, dirt, rain, condensation, seepage, corrosion, and more.

When designing electrical cabinets to meet NEMA standards, it’s important for manufacturers to consider the units’ thermal management needs. Depending on the system, some cooling units may compromise the electrical cabinet’s protection against the environment. Fortunately, Noren’s heat exchangers are designed to minimize contamination from the elements, many of them utilizing closed loop systems in which outside air never has to reach inside of the enclosure. After a careful system analysis, we can help clients decide which thermal management system will best meet your enclosures’ NEMA requirements.

Noren’s Products Exceed the Standards of NEMA-Class Enclosures

In addition to providing energy and cost-efficient thermal management, Noren’s heat exchangers also provide exceptional protection against the elements, often exceeding the requirements set by NEMA.
