Achieve Below Ambient Cooling with Air-to-Water Heat Exchangers

It’s been traditionally accepted that achieving below ambient cooling required refrigerant-based air conditioning or compressed air coolers, making air-to-air heat exchangers unfit for certain high ambient applications. Fortunately, that’s often no longer the case, thanks to Noren’s innovative air-to-water heat exchangers that can cool electronics relying solely on water temperature. Air-to-water coolers provide the benefits of below ambient cooling and the cost and energy-saving advantages of lowering your overall carbon footprint.

How Air-to-Water Heat Exchangers Work

Air-to-water heat exchangers are becoming increasingly more popular solutions for applications of all sizes, including electronic enclosures in hazardous locations. Air-to-water cooling units transfer heat using chilled water; as the water passes near electronic components through Noren’s heat exchangers, it absorbs the waste heat and  its temperature rises. Known as  sensible heat capacity, the energy absorbed by water increases its temperature by a few degress based on the flow rate in the system.  Slightly warmer water coming out of the outlet of the heat-exchanger is then either circulated through a chiller to bring its temperature down for re-use (closed-loop system) or is used for other applications within the facility (open-loop system) .

Noren’s air-to-water heat exchangers are among the most energy efficient solutions because their cooling effects rely on chilled water (typically only 1 gallon per minute), rather than air conditioning equipment. Because the only moving components are low wattage fans, cost savings are amplified by lower operating costs and maintenance needs. The heat-exchangers’ innovative design also eliminates the potential of outside air contaminating the sensitive equipment inside of electrical enclosures.
